What is a Chaperone?
A chaperone is a trained member of our staff who can accompany you during an examination. They are there to:
- Provide reassurance and support.
- Act as a safeguard for both patients and clinicians.
- Help maintain professional boundaries.
Chaperones can be present for any type of consultation but are particularly recommended for:
- Intimate examinations (e.g., breast, genital, or rectal exams).
- Situations where a patient feels anxious or uncomfortable.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Be offered a chaperone by the clinician before any examination.
- Request a chaperone at any time, before or during your appointment.
- Decline a chaperone, if you prefer privacy.
- Have a chaperone of the same gender if you wish, though this may depend on availability.
Clinical Staff Requests
Chaperones can also be requested by our clinical staff if they feel it is necessary to ensure safety and professionalism during an examination. This protects both the patient and the clinician.
If a Chaperone is Unavailable or Declined
- If a chaperone is unavailable, the clinician will explain the situation and discuss the options with you. They may offer to reschedule the examination or proceed only with your consent.
- If a chaperone is declined by the patient, the clinician will still provide care, ensuring the consultation is conducted professionally and respectfully.
Important: Whether a chaperone is present or declined, this will be documented in the consultation notes.
How to Request a Chaperone
You can request a chaperone:
- When booking your appointment – please inform our receptionist.
- Upon arrival – let your GP or nurse know before your examination begins.
There is no additional charge for this service.

- All chaperones adhere to strict confidentiality policies, and anything discussed or observed during your consultation will remain private and secure.
