NHS Health Check

The NHS Health Check is a free health check for eligible adults aged 40–74. It is designed to help prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease, and some types of dementia.

Who Is Eligible

You may be eligible for an NHS Health Check if you:

  • Are aged 40–74
  • Are registered with a GP in England
  • Have not already been diagnosed with:
    • Heart disease
    • Diabetes
    • Chronic kidney disease
    • High blood pressure (hypertension)
    • Atrial fibrillation
    • Stroke or TIA
  • Are not currently on a statin

Eligible patients will usually be invited by the practice around your birth month, but you can also contact us to check your eligibility.

What the NHS Health Check Involves

The NHS Health Check usually takes 20 minutes and is carried out by a trained healthcare professional.
It may include:

  • Measurement of height, weight, and BMI
  • Blood pressure check
  • A blood test to check cholesterol and blood sugar levels
  • Questions about your lifestyle, such as diet, exercise, alcohol intake, and smoking
  • Assessment of your risk of heart disease and stroke

After Your Health Check

Following your health check, we will:

  • Explain your results clearly
  • Discuss your personal health risk
  • Offer advice on how to reduce your risk
  • Provide support with lifestyle changes where needed
  • Arrange follow-up or treatment if appropriate

You will usually be offered an NHS Health Check every 5 years if you remain eligible.

If you have been invited or think you may be eligible:

  • Contact the practice by phone, online, or in person
  • Respond to an invitation sent by the practice
